As I was writing, I was testing to see what happened with different combinations. I tested with 8 pieces on an eighth of the board and it covered a 4x4 square area (16 squares of 64 which is actually a quarter. I sent an email to the developer asking about this. Here I chose 8 pieces and an eighth of the board to see how much area would be covered. This is on the iPad version of the app. Not sure if it will work differently on an Android?
