I agree that we rarely tell ourselves the truth about what we value. If I say “I have to floss my teeth each night” then what I’m saying is that I value dentist appointments where I have no cavities!

If I say I should study for my chemistry quiz, I’m saying that if I don’t, there’ll be a consequence that I’m not prepared to live with. Maybe a bad grade will get me in trouble with someone else but the course I’m taking is to meet my parents’ determination that I get accepted into medical school (not the case for me).

There are times when we forget why we do what we’re doing, or what we’re procrastinating on. I’m putting off getting back on track with following my food boundaries despite gaining weight. Maybe I don’t value being what culture calls a normal weight as much as I used to.
