I'd probaby enjoy both Shakespeare and Beowulf if they were "translated" into modern English. I remember something called "Coles Notes" that students (1970s) would read instead of reading the novel itself. Maybe these types of books, (now CliffNotes) would be another way to introduce students to the classics. If they see a story that interests them, they might want to read the original.
