My “Quiet Winner” Life

I love my hidden life. — Reflections on “8 Habits of Quiet Winners”

On a team-building day at work, we were given a personality quiz. Most people would have one main type and a different sub-type. Both were the same for me. I’m a “Thinker”, a task-oriented introvert. This was so reflective of my preferred work mode when I worked as a SAS programmer: “Give me the task and leave me alone”. This is the flashback I had when reading Tim Denning’s Ascent article: 8 Habits of Quiet Winners.

1. They can happily be a loser in one area of their life. — Tim Denning

I was told in my 20s I had the talent to make it as a professional singer. That’s not the life I wanted. In my 20s, I wanted to enter a religious order, and they refused to admit me. I got married instead, and that marriage failed 15 years later. I’m happily married now. There are many things I’ll never be good at. I’m not athletic, and I have a tendency to weigh more than I want to. I’ve had a few successful periods in my food journey. Now isn’t one of them.

2. They don’t care about looking like a winner. — Tim Denning

Much to my mother’s chagrin, I’ve never cared about how I looked. My job required me to look presentable, not fashionable. If I was clean and not wrinkled, that was enough. When I first heard…
