My introduction to the guitar was a song I liked. I learned the three chords I needed. Then I practiced changing them in the order the song required. I would sing along as I did this so I felt like I was accomplishing something. I took the same approach with the piano.

I prefer this to learning sheet music and individual notes. I know how to read music, but my vision makes sight reading a challenge.

What kept me from writing this past 6 months was an obsession with chess. :)
