Medium was built for two types of stories: The one-time story. … The best case scenario for Medium would be to have everyone write once or twice every decade. These would generate the best stories possible. The expert story. Coach Tony told us multiple times. Medium isn’t for creators. It’s for experts.

There’s Never Been A Worse Time To Write on Medium addresses 4 types of writers:

1 — The writer willing to make money

The only activity where I expected to make money, and did, was in my job with the Canadian federal government. I was with them for 33 years and only in the last 14 of them did I actually enjoy what I was doing. A bonus, but not what I expected. Other things, including writing I do for enjoyment.

2 — The Pro Writer

I’m not a pro writer, nor have I ever wanted that life. Like other talented writers, I have zero inclination or aptitude for self-marketing. Also, I knew myself well enough to recognize that I lacked the discipline and perseverance to push myself through the difficult days.

3 — the Casual Writer

As a casual WordPress blogger, I switched to Medium because it was so easy to make my posts look good. No need to learn coding and SEO. I had more interaction with readers in two months than I did in two years on WordPress. For some reason, I never responded as many others did to the trickle of dollars. This was only a sign that more people were reading what I wrote than I ever saw happen on any other platform.

I keep most of my work behind the paywall to cover my Medium and Canva subscription costs. I have no illusions that I’ll ever earn enough…
