The apartment building we've lived in since 1998 was sold a few months ago. The new owner wants tenants to move out so they can renovate the units and charge at least double the current rent to new tenants.
Their strategy has been to offer several thousand dollars to tenants to move. We've chosen to stay because we could never find a two-bedroom with the space we have. Newer buildings have much smaller units. Also, I'm vision-impaired and the thought of moving to a new area terrifies me. There are a few other reasons we don't want to move and we've accepted a deal to pay $350 more per month than we're paying now (the market value of a one-bedroom unit).
Money is NOT the most important thing. The comfort and security of being able to stay where we are, especially at our age (65 and 75) can't be quantified.
