Dissatisfied Medium writers talk about Substack. I knew nothing about it so I did some research. Since I’m a “hobby” writer who’s not looking to earn an income, I never gave serious thought to building an email list. I rarely write more than one article per week. What would I put in a newsletter?
Contrary to some opinions, I don’t think Medium will disappear. However, you could still lose your Medium data due to a technical glitch or for some other reason as Lokajit Tikayatray described in You May Lose All Your Medium Stories and Drafts. In her How To Not Get The Door Shut In Your Face Once Medium Is Gone article Kristina God describes other epic Medium disasters.
I recognize a Medium “back-up” is essential. I find the zipped file I receive through the Medium export function utterly bewildering. In What If Medium Disappeared Tomorrow?, Joel Brown explains the contents of this file and suggests strategies.
Arbab Z. uses Hub pages as his backup plan. I’d probably use Substack as a second home for my chess and Catholic articles. Maybe their Notes tab would be a great place for “short-form” pieces to promote chess and Catholic content I enjoy.
I realize that substack is not designed for “just a blog” with no content behind a paywall. Who says I can’t use it that way? I abandoned my WordPress blog to write on Medium to free myself from technical complexities and focus on writing. Why not use substack for the same reason?
