We want the best for our "future self". We want to be healthy, to have a comfortable income and to enjoy good relationships with others. Yet we never think about how the things we do, and especially things we neglect to do will impact our future self.
Actions that have the lowest current reward have the biggest negative impact on our future self when we don't make ourselves do them. We don't floss or lift weights so our future self will wear dentures and suffer broken bones.
