When I joined Medium, there was no follower requirement. I think that what made my follower count grow is that I read and responded a LOT. I enjoyed that more than writing my own stories. Sometimes I'd combine comments for several stories in my own story. After two years on Medium, I still don't write with any consistency and only think about stats when I see the Friday email from Medium.
