Whenever I find myself in a group situation, I've observed how self-centered people's conversations are. No one listens. Some are courteous enough to wait for a millisecond of silence before speaking, but they've been listening to what they want to say, not to what the other has said. I don't participate except for a whispered sentence to my husband now and then. I occupy myself with my tablet or with my yarn projects, longing for the silence my soul craves.
