I’m fascinated by chess and like Jessi Shakarian, I enjoy writing about what I’m learning about it. When I first played chess, the internet didn’t exist, much less all the resources we have now to play and learn.

The articles I’ve read, the videos I’ve watched and the podcasts I’ve listened to have fed my fascination and raised so many questions!

There’s an app for that!

I’ve written in detail about some of the resources I’ve found useful as a beginner/novice player.

Learning by watching

As much as I enjoy and benefit from apps, I find videos the most helpful when I take notes. Here are the best I’ve found so far.

I plan to start watching classical chess games and learning from the masters.

Seeing chess everywhere

Spending so much energy on chess, I’m seeing how it is similar to writing and weight loss.

Skills and strategies I’m learning about

Analyzing games

When is the right time for a chess novice to start annotating and analyzing games? What’s the best way to do it? Use the engine or avoid it like the plague? Should I stay a chess-engine virgin?

In exploring this, I discovered the Lichess study feature.
